Safety Guide

Letter sent Mar. 2, 2022

Dear Playhouse Patrons,

Since May 2020, The Playhouse has worked very hard to provide in-person live theatre in a safe and healthy environment. We have found creative solutions including:

  • performing outdoors for our audiences who sat in their cars,
  • keeping our audiences small to allow for appropriate distancing, and
  • embracing masking for everyone.

We protected our performers as information evolved by:

  • staging with social distancing in place and minimizing touching and close contact where possible,
  • wearing masks until late in rehearsals,
  • having crew remain masked backstage during performances,
  • wearing masks onstage during the winter of 2020, and
  • masking audiences at all performances to date.

Our policy for volunteers, audience, students, and the staff was and is, “If you are sick, stay home.” To our knowledge, The Playhouse has not spread the coronavirus to anyone.

We – and you – have adapted over and over again during this pandemic. I want to take this moment to thank all of you who have trusted us. Your patience, flexibility, and good cheer have infused our volunteers and staff with the same generous spirit. It has been especially wonderful to see how our commitment to putting public health considerations first over these many months has been supported by the majority of our patrons.

As has been our policy, we have chosen to follow the guidelines that offered the most protection for our audiences and volunteers, with the promise that as things evolved so would we. Today there has been a change in the measuring process. The CDC no longer recommends masks in counties of low or medium risk, nor do our local governments. Thus,

The Playhouse no longer requires masks to attend a performance. However, masks are welcomed! If it makes you more comfortable, please feel free to wear a mask. We understand that individual healthcare is a matter of personal practices and choices.

We do ask that

  • if you are feeling sick, or
  • have a positive test, or
  • have had exposure to someone who has COVID

please call the ticket office and reschedule your performance. Our refund and exchange policy remains in effect: You have up to 7 days following your performance date to request an exchange or refund.

Finally, should circumstances change once again, mask mandates return, or the CDC alters their recommendations, we will follow the most stringent guidelines.

As we look to the rest of this season and our next one, know that we promise that we will always be creative. It’s our mission: To create extraordinary, shared experiences through live theatre.

Should you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us. After all, we are your community theatre.

Wishing you all health, happiness, and LOTS of theater.

David R. Kilpatrick
Executive Director
Des Moines Community Playhouse

We have drawn upon the guidelines suggested by local, state, and federal agencies, experts, and associations. The Playhouse remains committed to monitoring the current recommendations, guidelines, and restrictions to which we are subject.
